Family of U.S. black motorist gets almost $3mn over police shooting

Last year, we all saw Castile get shot and killed by police officer Jeronimo Yanez on Facebook Live as he sat in his vehicle with his girlfriend and her 4-year old daughter.

"No amount of money could ever replace Philando", the joint statement said. "The settlement should provide some measure of comfort to those angered by his death". Castile had a permit for his gun.

The shooting gained widespread attention after the victim's girlfriend, who was in the auto with her then four-year-old daughter, livestreamed its gruesome aftermath on Facebook.

Friday, the trial of a former police officer from the university of Cincinnati (Ohio, north) accused of killing another motorist black, Sam DuBose, has been cancelled due to lack of consensus on a verdict among the jurors.

Castile was killed one day after another black male, Alton Sterling, was shot and killed at close range by police in Louisiana.

The settlement Monday was reached just days after a reported $1.5 million settlement was reached between the city of Ferguson, Missouri, and the family of Michael Brown, who was killed by police.

"Legal settlements after mistakes do not show leadership", Sherman said.

'GoldenEye' ransomware cyber attack goes global
Several organisations in Europe and the USA have been crippled by a ransomware attack dubbed "Petya, also known as PetWrap". Although no one knows yet who's behind the attack, some are comparing it to the WannaCry cyberattacks from May.

During his trial, Yanez, 29, testified that Castile ignored his commands not to pull out his gun.

The settlement will be paid by the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust at no cost to St. Anthony taxpayers, the statement said.

Jackson later said that Castile "should have never reached for that weapon", despite any supporting evidence that Castile did reach for his gun.

Mr Yanez maintains that he feared for his life.

In spite of the fact that the dash-cam footage does not show what happened inside of the auto, Jackson confidently asserted that Castile "must have gotten that gun out, and when he did, that officer must have felt like 'I don't know what your intentions are, I have no choice'". According to squad-car video that captured the shooting, Castile said: "I'm not pulling it out" before Yanez fired seven rapid shots.

The squad-car video shows the shooting, but does not show what happened inside the vehicle or what Yanez saw, leaving room for reasonable doubt. The department serves the cities of St. Anthony, Lauderdale and Falcon Heights, where the shooting occurred on Larpenteur Avenue.

In the wake of Castile's death, St. Anthony requested a voluntary assessment by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Messages left with the city were not immediately returned. Valerie Castile will craft a distribution plan that will be filed in Hennepin County civil court, he said.
