Hate speech stabbing suspect has repeated outbursts in court

One of the victims of the train attack, Micah Fletcher, was in court for the arraignment.

Ricky John Best, 53, of Happy Valley moved forward to intervene and was stabbed in the neck. After stumbling and telling Fletcher to hit him again, court documents say Christian stabbed Fletcher in the neck.

The lone man to survive Friday's stabbings says he's having a hard time processing what happened. According to an affidavit of probable cause, while in the police auto, Christian allegedly said that he was a "patriot" and admitted to the crime and saying, "that's what liberalism gets you".

The outbursts were followed by a commotion outside the courtroom. Jeremy Christian yelled as he walked into the courtroom Tuesday.

Deputies escorted the man from the scene, prompting the group to lash out at law enforcement for protecting him.

Fletcher told the local NBC station on Tuesday that he was trying to come to terms with the tragedy.

"Me and my friend were going to get off the MAX and then we turned around while they were fighting and he just started stabbing people", she told KPTV. "I don't want them at the rally, and they'll be kicked out".

"Tell everyone on the train I love them". That's what I'm doing. Fletcher was stabbed first in the neck then Namkai-Meche was stabbed twice, also in the neck.

A one point a woman wearing a white headscarf approached the grieving mother, who warmly leaned forward and embraced her.

Police say Christian has no known history of mental health problems, suggesting that his motivation was pure hatred. One of the men, Rick Best, an army veteran who'd served in Iraq and Afganistan and father of four, died on the train.

Public defender Gregory Scholl has been assigned to Christian's case, Borg said.

Christian pulled a folded knife from his pocket and concealed it in his hand.

Court documents from Tuesday said Christian "reports he is transient and does not know the last time he had a permanent address", according to CNN. "Get out if you don't like free speech!"

Meanwhile, video showed Christian grabbing his belongings and leaving the train, according to the affidavit.

The homicide detective investigating the triple stabbing on a Portland MAX train says in court documents that surveillance and cellphone videos show Christian cutting the three victims with a knife.

One of the teenagers, 16-year-old Destinee Mangum, said Christian "told us to go back to Saudi Arabia", and that "we should just kill ourselves".

"We need to remember this is about those little girls", he said.

Christian faces charges of aggravated murder and other crimes.

Three men stood to defend the girls. "These courageous men saw the immediate injustice and didn't hesitate to act". Her son and another man died. He was only recently released from the hospital.

But three white men stepped forward to protect them.

In response to the Portland killings, Trump tweeted they were unacceptable and that, "the victims were standing up to hate and intolerance". A 21-year-old, Micah Fletcher, was also stabbed but survived. One of the women was wearing a hijab. In one of his poems, he spoke out against the prejudice faced by Muslims since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

TEMPLETON: He's been charged with two counts of aggravated murder, attempted murder and intimidation in the second degree.

The incident happened on a light rail train in Portland on Friday. He hurled insults at rally organizers as well as counter-protesters and was not a Trump supporter, Gibson said. "Our prayers are w/ them". A witness later said Christian called Muslims "criminals" and yelled "get off the bus and out of this country because you don't pay taxes here".
