IKEA & Apple's AR App Will Change The Way You Shop

The new AR app will be available in Fall 2017.

Apple management mentioned IKEA very briefly in the iOS 11 keynote and mentioned the virtual furniture app, although they didn't say a lot about it. According to Michael Valdsgaard, Leader of Digital Transformation at Inter Ikea, "This will be the first augmented reality app that will enable you to make buying decisions".

While IKEA already offers a basic version of this within its iOS app, Valdsgaard says the advent of ARKit means that it will be far more accurate than it is now.

The app will allow users to "place" virtual IKEA furniture at home in real-time through an iOS device's display. The app will make it possible for customers to try furniture in their homes to see how it looks before actually buying it.

Cavaliers vs. Warriors, Game 3
Broke the record of 14 straight postseason wins held by the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, who did it twice. Including the loss in Game 3 , Cleveland is 3-7 SU and ATS in its last 10 games as a home underdog.

"Ideally, you could place a sofa in your home using the app, and then click it in the shopping cart on the e-commerce site", said Valdsgaard. Now, as per the company, Apple's AR platform will allow for a much greater quality and consistency. We have nearly 400 of them and we want to complement them in as many ways as possible, through mobile, social media, AR and third-party e-commerce players.

Apple has been working on its augmented reality projects for quite some time now and in a recent interview with Bloomberg, CEO Tim Cook has said that he is so excited about the AR efforts of the company that he wanted to "yell out and scream".

While Valdsgaard emphasized that Ikea remains a furniture company first and foremost, tech will become a key element in its operations. He added that Ikea is hoping to have 500-600 catalog items ready to view in 3D at launch. As for now, what do you think about IKEA's attempts to integrate Apple's ARKit in a new app?
