Iran fires missiles at militant groups in eastern Syria

In retaliation for the two terrorist attacks, Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRCG) fired mid-range missiles hitting ISIL centers in Syria's Deir Ezzur, the IRGC said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The U.S. military confirmed a U.S. F-18 Super Hornet shot down Sunday a Syrian SU-22 after it dropped bombs near the U.S. partner forces, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, aligned with the Americans in the fight against the Islamic State group.

A Guard statement carried on its website said many "terrorists" were killed and their weapons had been destroyed in the strike.

BEIRUT, June 19 (Reuters) - Russia, Iran and the United States are drawing new red lines for each other in Syria, with Moscow warning Washington on Monday it would treat any USA -led coalition planes in its area of operations as potential targets after the us air force downed a Syrian jet.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard launched the missiles against the site in Deir al-Zour, according to the Tasnim news agency.

Six assailants killed at least 16 people at Iran's Parliament building and a shrine dedicated to the republic's revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini.

Russia's defense ministry says it will treat US -led coalition planes in Syria, west of the Euphrates River, as targets after the USA military shot down a Syrian Air Force jet on Sunday.

The missile attack on Syria was Iran's first strike outside its own territory in almost 30 years, the Times of Israel reported. The militant terrorist group The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack in Tehran.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the IRGC's Aerospace Force, said the missiles were fired from the Iranian provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan and flew over Iraq before landing in Syria.

Analyst Foad Izadi said the strike was meant to convey several messages.

Iran presented the missile strike as a response to twin IS terror attacks in Iran on June 7 in which 17 people were killed, and Revolutionary Guards officials warned that other assaults on Iran would lead to similar retaliatory attacks. According to the Times of Israel, citing Israeli intelligence sources, the missile was the Shahab-3, which is based on the North Korean Nodong-1 missile.

"Obviously and clearly, some reactionary countries of the region, especially Saudi Arabia, have announced that they are trying to bring insecurity into Iran", he said. Iran and Saudi Arabia are on opposing sides of wars in Syria and Yemen, fueled in part by competing sectarian ideologies and their differing stances toward Washington.

"We are carrying out operations from inside Iranian territories, like America and Russian Federation, which, as military powers, occupy a special position", Alaeddin Boroujerdi, an Iranian MP who heads the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said in an interview with state TV.

Iranian officials threatened more strikes.
