MTA Supervisors Suspended Without Pay Over Harlem Subway Derailment

MTA Supervisors Suspended Without Pay Over Harlem Subway Derailment

New York's ailing subway system has been heavily criticised by passengers over the past year for being slow and inefficient.

A commuter exits a closed off station after a subway train derailment, Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in the Harlem neighborhood of NY.

The accident occurred about 10 a.m. local time on route A of the NY subway with a train going South. Passenger Skip Suva told us, "We were between 135th and 125th and. the train started shaking insanely violently, the lights started flickering". There were 34 minor injuries, including smoke inhalation, according to the New York Times, and 17 were taken to nearby hospitals.

Lhota said the derailed train still had to be removed in order to establish the extent of the track damage. The accident resulted in delays and suspensions across the subway system, and officials were not sure when full service would be restored.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the derailment "an unacceptable manifestation of the system's current state".

MTA Chairman Joe Lhota said at a news briefing shortly before noon Tuesday that the brakes on the southbound A train went into emergency mode, propelling the first two cars of the eight-car train into a concrete wall and off the tracks. "New Yorkers deserve better", the governor said.

All passengers on the original A train were evacuated.

"I will vouch for reports that the train left the rails", another passenger, Mary Hodges, said.

White House Responds to Committee on 'Tapes' By Referring to Trump's Tweets
The tweeted admission by Trump, that he made no tapes of his conversations with Comey, was lawyered before being posted. It was he said-he said, Trump's word against Comey's.

One man told NBC News he initially thought the jerking was just a part of his normal subway commute.

The No. 1 train prepares to leave the South Ferry Station, Tuesday June 27, 2017, in NY.

Trapped in the dark, passengers were then asked to exit the train and walk along the third rail, which had been shut off.

That sort of comprehensive investment into the subway system, Dwyer argues, is necessary to get the transit system back on track and prevent incidents like Tuesday's derailment-not an obvious statement, but one that bears repeating nonetheless.

Riders shared pictures and videos on social media of the incident.

The panic was caused by the smoke which filled the tunnel.

Commuter railroads have also had problems recently.
