Official London Grenfell fire toll at 79, say police

London police said Saturday they believed the death toll at the Grenfell Tower fire had risen to at least 58, as Britain comes to grips with what could be the worst fire in the country since World War II, Reuters reported.

Members of emergency services work inside the burnt out remains of the Grenfell Tower in North Kensington, London, on June 18, 2017.

In other developments, a company that renovated the tower denied that cladding on the building was banned in the United Kingdom after comments made by Chancellor Philip Hammond.

Only five victims have been formally identified - and Cundy said that because of the fire's intensity and the devastation it caused, authorities may not be able to identify everybody who died.

The previous figure was 58.

Mr Cundy also promised an "exhaustive" criminal investigation into the fire that would also look at a major refurbishment of the building completed a year ago.

"The bad reality of the fire that night means that we are supporting some people who may have lost a number of members of their family on that night", Cundy said.

Two British officials said Sunday that new exterior cladding used in a renovation of Grenfell Tower may have been banned under United Kingdom building regulations.

A prominent British Labour Party lawmaker is calling for police and the government to seize all documents relating to the renovation of a London high-rise destroyed by a fire that killed dozens of its residents.

GST switch-over to happen from June 30 midnight
The launch event will be held at Central Hall of Parliament to which MPs, CMs and state finance ministers are being invited. PM Narendra Modi government is planning to convene a special one hour midnight session.

'This is an incredible distressing time for families and they have my commitment that we will do this as quickly as we possibly can, ' he said.

The government has promised a full public inquiry, but that has done little to a sense of frustration at the lack of information about how the fire moved so quickly to engulf the building.

The 23-year-old Alhajali is the only victim of the Grenfell Tower fire to be officially named as the hard process of identifying human remains continues.

They demanded justice for the victims and claimed Wednesday's fatal blaze was due to negligence, with many citing the new cladding put on the 1974 concrete tower.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Theresa May has been criticized for her slowness in visiting the victims of the fire - her visits took place more than 48 hours after the fire broke out - and refusal to answer questions about government oversights that might have increased the deadly nature of the blaze.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr show on BBC One this morning, Hammond said that it is his belief that the cladding, which was wrapped around the tower block to approve its appearance, was banned.

British health authorities will also provide long-term bereavement counselling for those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.

There are also 78 families who have been assessed and are on course to be placed in properties that are local or in the neighbouring borough by the end of the day.
