Paris: 4 family members detained after Champs-Elysees attack

Last month a police officer was killed and two seriously injured following a shooting at the Champs-Elysees.

A nearby subway station in the area was shut down.

On April 20, a few days before the first round of the French presidential elections, police officers were attacked, with one dead and another one injured as the result.

Police forces secure the area on the Champs Elysées next to the suspected auto, center, in Paris, Monday, June 19, 2017.

After a series of major terrorist attacks that occurred in France over the past two years, the country is in a state of emergency.

The Paris prosecutor's counter-terrorism unit said an investigation had been opened into the incident only a short walk away from the Elysee presidential palace and the U.S. embassy.

Speaking to reporters, interior ministry's spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the incident "seems to be a voluntary act".

Monday's incident is the fifth time in four months that security forces have been attacked in the French capital and comes only a month after a man attacked an officer with a hammer at Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Kovind is NDA Presidential candidate
Even with the BJP's token gesture of consulting the opposition last week, Kovind's name was not revealed. Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind will be NDA's Presidential candidate, said BJP chief Amit Shah on Monday.

Mr Favereau wrote that the gendarmes smashed open the windows of the auto while it was in flames and dragged out its occupant.

Collomb also said there were weapons and explosives inside of the auto.

Anti-terror prosecutors have opened an inquiry.

He said police broke the window and pulled the man from the vehicle while other police used fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. The Paris police bomb squad, immediately summoned to the site, helped extinguish the flames.

Security analysts say vehicle attacks often represent last-ditch attempts at violence and are hard to prevent.

The incident yesterday was the latest in a string of attacks in London and Paris.

The driver died in the incident, which was described as an attack on security forces by Interior Minister Gérard Collomb.

A senior police officer and his female companion were both killed by a radicalised man at their home in the Paris suburbs a year ago.
