Presidential Election: BJP names Bihar Guv Ram Nath Kovind as NDA candidate

India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has proposed that a politician from a low caste become the next president, its top strategist said on Monday, in a move to consolidate the party's support among poorer voters. He also served as national spokesperson for the party. BJP President Amit Shah said after the meeting that Kovind would be the NDA candidate. He was Union Government's advocate in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and Central Government's Standing Counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993. He further questioned the need to hold meeting with allies if BJP did not wish to discuss the name with them. He became advocate-on-record of the Supreme Court of India in 1978.

Congratulations to Shri Ramnath Kovind ji on being announced as the Presidential candidate of NDA (National Democratic Alliance). During his parliamentary tenure of 12 years, he emphasized on the development of basic infrastructure for education in rural areas by helping in construction of school buildings in Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand under M.P. L.A.D. In 1971, he was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi. If elected, he will be the second Indian President after K.R. Narayanan to hail from the Dalit community.

Kovind, 71, is a Dalit leader and an experienced political hand.

Shah also said that PM Narendra Modi has himself discussed Kovind's candidature with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former PM Manmohan Singh.

The BJP had earlier constituted a three-member committee to pick a candidate for the upcoming election with Venkaiah Naidu and Rajnath Singh meeting opposition leaders for arriving at a consensus. In 2002, he represented India at the United Nations and addressed the UN General Assembly. He served as a member of the board of management of BR Ambedkar University, Lucknow.

His website as governor of Bihar recalled that Kovind had official orders issued by the Centre in 1997, which adversely affected the interests of employees of the Scheduled Castes/Tribes.
