Presidential polls: Shiv Sena refuses blanket support to NDA

Ruling allies Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena on Thursday engaged in a verbal spat ahead of a crucial meeting between BJP President Amit Shah with Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday.

The BJP President is expected to appease Thackeray and ensure his support for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate in the upcoming presidential election.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray in the past had said he had suggested Bhagwat's name for the post of president. "It was a very positive meeting and local issues were not discussed", said a Sena leader privy to the development. "Uddhavji will recommend his name to Amit Shah when he calls on him at "Matoshree" (Thackeray's residence) on Sunday", Raut said. Harping on the party's pet names - RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and agro-scientist M. S. Swaminathan - Thackeray said Bhagwat was proposed as India is a Hindu nation, but the country has lost a good opportunity by ignoring him. According to the source, during the meeting Shah appealed to the Sena to support the BJP's nominee for the president's post.

Fadnavis made the remarks in reference to reports speculating mid-term polls in the state against the backdrop of farmers' stir for loan waiver in view of the agrarian crisis.

BJP President Amit Shah arrives at party headquarters for BJP Parliamentary Board meeting scheduled to take place at 12 noon in Delhi to discuss its nominee for the upcoming Presidential elections. BJP ally Shiv Sena, though, has objected to it.

"Our biggest achievement is ending communalism, dynastic rule and appeasement (politics)", he said. We are hopeful of receiving Shiv Sena's support.

Prime Minister Modi also spoke to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswamy over NDA's presidential candidate pick. They can also win the Presidential elections.

Soon after, Thackeray said, "If you are propping up a Dalit candidate only to get Dalit votes, why should we be interested?"

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena today demanded that the old currency notes to the tune of Rs 2,771 crore lying with the district central cooperative (DCC) banks should be exchanged by the Reserve Bank. The Sena chief has kept the BJP waiting.
