Simon Coveney: North 'may be most vulnerable to bad Brexit deal'

Speaking before she entered talks with the new Fine Geal Leader, Foster threw down the gauntlet to Sinn Fein and said her party were "ready to dance" in order to restore a power sharing executive up North.

THE north is particularly vulnerable to the impact of a bad Brexit deal, the Republic's new foreign affairs minister has warned.

The remarks came after warnings by the nationalist Sinn Fein and SDLP and the cross-community Alliance Party that a deal with the DUP would undermine the Government's attempts to restore the powersharing executive at Stormont.

The failure of the Irish Government to fulfil its obligations as a co-guarantor for the Good Friday Agreement is a national scandal, the South Antrim MLA said.

The Prime Minister has confirmed she will publish the details of any deal that is reached between her party and the DUP, as she insisted talks will not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday Agreement. Perhaps it is. But I'm going to ask a few questions first. Number 10 has gone from being a partisan player to a neutral space where all parties could discuss the future of Northern Ireland, together. One former minister and influential figure said: "If we had a strong signal that she were backsliding I think she would be in major difficulty".

Unless Sinn Fein and the DUP agree to go back into a devolved government by June 29, direct rule will have to be imposed from London.

Colum Eastwood, leader of the SDLP, Northern Ireland's second-largest Irish nationalist party, said his party had a "positive" meeting with the prime minister over her efforts to come up with a deal with the DUP.

Iran fires missiles at militant groups in eastern Syria
The missile attack on Syria was Iran's first strike outside its own territory in almost 30 years, the Times of Israel reported . A Guard statement carried on its website said many "terrorists" were killed and their weapons had been destroyed in the strike.

Sinn Féin's Northern Ireland leader Michelle O'Neill said that on Brexit the Sinn Féin call for special designated status for Northern Ireland within the European Union was "building up traction" across Europe.

The British and Irish governments were parties to the agreement, and Irish voters approved it in two 1998 referendums.

"These talks will be hard at points, but we shall be approaching them in a constructive and respectful way".

She said: "We want to see an administration set up again that will last and one that will last for all of the people of Northern Ireland".

UK Prime Minister Theresa May's job will be under threat from MPs within her own party if she "waters down" Brexit. "They can't have it both ways, it has to be dealt with sensibly", she said.

"And there's work to be done to find middle ground in some of those areas and to accommodate the concerns of people while understanding the political obstacles that other parties may have in terms of some of the issues that are still under discussion".
