Threat closes Washington college after protests over race

The Evergreen State College, where last week a debate over safe spaces and institutional racism between student activists and a professor spilled over onto the national stage, was closed for the day on Thursday following what campus police called a "direct threat to campus safety".

"All are asked to leave campus or return to residence halls for instructions", the notice read.

Law enforcement thought the threat via a 911 call was credible enough to forward to Evergreen State College in Olympia, and school officials made a decision to close the campus, Sandra Kaiser, Evergreen's vice president for college relations, told reporters Thursday.

Protesters, in a statement to the newspaper, claimed what began as "anti-black comments" on social media had turned into physical violence by police and repercussions for students who protested.

In an email to school administrator Rashida Jones, Weinstein questioned the school's choice to ask white students not to come to campus on its Day of Absence this year.

Tensions reached a new high after the public airing of an email exchange between school employees over a planned anti-racist "day of absence" event. Student protesters took offense at the email, which was published in the student paper, and some included calls for Weinstein's firing among a litany of protest demands.

Weinstein wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal about his experience, and appeared on Tucker Carlson's Fox News Channel program.

Below is a video of a demonstration from earlier this week that went viral.

"White students have never been required to leave campus, for Day of Absence, or any Evergreen activity", the college said.
