Trump Lawyer Contradicts Trump Tweet, Stumps Sunday Beltway Hosts

Appearing on several morning news shows Sunday, Sekulow attempted to convince viewers that the president was not speaking literally when he tweeted Friday: "I'm being investigated for firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director by the man who told me to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director". He then conceded on Fox News Sunday that he doesn't know for sure if there is an investigation or not.

In his new official role as a Trump defender, Sekulow made the rounds of the Sunday talk shows.

Sekulow had previously maintained that Trump is not under investigation, so Wallace was quick to confront Sekulow over the apparent contradiction. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., says the best thing for everyone will be for the investigation to run its course. His interview with Fox News' Chris Wallace proved to be the most combative and compelling one. When the president makes his remarks this week, will he say I'm no longer talking about the Russian Federation investigation, I'm going to let Jay Sekulow be my spokesperson for this, like Bill Clinton put Lannie Davis in charge? "So that's the constitutional threshold question here", Sekulow said. Sekulow holds a Ph.D. from Regent and is a professor at its law school. He said Trump's tweet was not a confirmation of the investigation, but instead a response to a report in The Washington Post.

"I can't read people's minds, but I can tell you this, we have not been notified that there's an investigation of the president of the United States". He pointed out that Sekulow, now saying the president was "being investigated", appeared to have changed his answer.

"SEKULOW: Here's what you're trying to - here's what you're trying to do, Chris, and I appreciate that you're - you're trying to push back". Sekulow again repeated that he can not read minds.

Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo seemed to agree, writing, "this just isn't his line of work".

According to a source familiar with the situation, the White House reached out to CBS News on Thursday and asked if the network would be interested in a Sunday morning interview with Sekulow.

The anchor continued, "The idea that Mueller wouldn't be looking at the circumstances surrounding the firing of the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation defies common sense". Late past year, ACLJ sued the Justice Department, seeking records of the June meeting at the Phoenix airport between then-Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch and former president Bill Clinton. The president gave a major address in Cuba.

"A lot of you have been asking to have a voice on this", he said.
