Ashley Madison Data Breach Victims May Receive up to $3500

The security breach didn't deter everyone though, as the website today boasts almost 54 million members and counting.

It has tightened security since discovering the breach in July 2015. The settlement will also be used to pay those who had their data leaked after they paid a fee to have their Ashley Madison account deleted.

The parent company of Ashley Madison.com agreed Friday to a settlement of $11.2 million for the website's 2015 data breach that exposed data belonging to millions of its customers.

Major Cyber-Attack Could Cost World Economy $121.4bn
The first, the WannaCry ransomware, is estimated to have cost around $8 billion in more than 100 countries. Actual losses are predicted to be as high as $121 billion.

Layn Phillips, a former federal judge who mediated the settlement, said in a court filing that the accord offered "a valuable recovery for the class in the face of many obstacles", including Ruby's preference that victims arbitrate their claims. The hackers, who called themselves "The Impact Team', said they planned to release real names, profiles, nude photos, credit card details and "secret sexual fantasies" unless the site was shut down".

"While ruby denies any wrongdoing, the parties have agreed to the proposed settlement in order to avoid the uncertainty, expense, and inconvenience associated with continued litigation, and believe that the proposed settlement agreement is in the best interest of ruby and its customers", it added. Ruby also spent millions of dollars to bolster its security and improve user privacy. Class members can recoup up to $3,500 based on their documented losses, according to the preliminary class-action settlement. Any remaining funds in the pool "will be divided equally amongst Settlement Class Members who submit a Valid Claim Form and Reasonable Documentation demonstrating that his or her Personal Information was released publicly as a result of the Data Breach".

The lawsuits, consolidated in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, will be dropped should the courts agree to the settlement.
