Australian woman who called 911 shot dead by Minneapolis police

The stepson of an Australian woman shot dead by U.S. police is demanding answers after it was revealed the two officers involved had not turned on their body cameras.

A Minneapolis yoga teacher who called police Saturday night to report a disturbance near her house was fatally shot by an officer who, according to eyewitness reports, didn't even get out of the auto. Not only were both police officers' body cameras turned off turning the shooting that took place around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, but the squad car's camera also did not record the shooting.

Ruszczyk had been living in the States for three years and was planning her wedding next month to her fiancé Don Damond. "She was a very passionate woman ... and she thought that something bad was happening, and next thing, I know they took my best friend's life", the man, named Zach, said.

"I have questions about why the body cams weren't on", Mayor Betsy Hodges said during a Sunday afternoon news conference.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed to news.com.au it was "providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian woman who died in a shooting in Minneapolis".

"More information will be available once initial interviews with incident participants and any witnesses are complete", the agency said in a statement Sunday. "I am in constant communication with our Inspector Kathy Waite to understand as soon as possible what happened and why".

In their statement, the Minneapolis PD acknowledges that "at some point" someone was shot, but that the cameras in the squad auto were also not turned on.

Friends and neighbors described her as a "loving person" whose "whole mission in life was to help people with any problem", KARE reported.

"I'm so done with all this violence, it's so much bulls-t".

Zach Damond, whose father was engaged to the woman, says she heard noise in an alley and called police.

"How someone teaching meditation and spreading love can be shot dead by police while in her pajamas is beyond comprehension", Matt Omo, Damond's friend, told the Australia Broadcasting Corporation.

Justine Damond ran her meditation workshops at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community, which paid tribute in a Facebook post.

"Policing, the concept, is an unchecked variable in this nation", one vigil attendee said, according to ABC affiliate KSTP.

"She was a healer, she was loved and she should be alive". At some point, a weapon was sacked and a woman fatally shot.

Following the shooting, hearts and messages were drawn in colourful chalk on the driveway of near where the woman was shot. The requirement came as the Twin Cities area was shaken by the police killing last summer of Philando Castile, a black driver whose girlfriend live-streamed the aftermath of the encounter outside St. Paul.
