Bagged out: Woolworths to phase out plastic bags within a year

An estimated 6 billions bags are used in Australia every year.

Time to start digging out those environmentally-friendly bags you never use; that 15-cent reusable bag price could start adding up very quickly if you're prone to a big weekly shop.

Both supermarket chains had previously implemented plastic bag recycling bins at many of their outlets, with Coles rolling out the initiative in February 2013.

Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci says Woolworths is phasing out single-use bags because "it's the right thing to do".

Friday's announcement ensures stores in states that have not passed government legislation regarding the distribution of single-use plastic bags - NSW, Victoria and Western Australia - will come in line with stores in states and territories where this is already legislated.

Following reports this morning that supermarket chain Woolworths is set to phase-out plastic bags, Australia's other supermarket giant Coles has announced they're following suit.

More durable plastic bags will be made available for 15c, and of course, their green hessian bags will also be available.

Lobby groups have been campaigning for decades to "ban the bag".

There are plans in place for Queensland to do the same next year.

DMX Charged With Fourteen Counts of Tax Evasion

A new study has shown 65 per cent of Kiwis would support a levy on plastic shopping bags. IKEA stopped using free disposable bags in 2013.

"We now give out more than 3.2 billion lightweight plastic bags a year and hence can play a significant role in reducing overall plastic bag usage", says Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banucci.

"We feel this is an issue we need to take a stand on", Mr Banducci said.

The grocery giant now hands out more than 3.2 billion lightweight plastic bags a year to customers, and says the decision meant Woolworths was taking its environmental responsibility seriously.

"Our customers can also expect further commitments in reducing plastic use in all parts of our supply chain, especially in fruit and vegetables".

"At the moment they're buying a bulk quantity of single-use bags and passing the cost on throughout your purchases", Johnson said.

The hot race to announce the banning of plastic bags has left one major supermarket lagging behind.

Environmental campaigners welcomed the decision on Friday, however called for further action by Australian governments at the state and national level.
