British baby Charlie Gard to be evaluated by U.S. doctor

A doctor from the United States, who believes experimental treatment could help save the life of Charlie Gard, visited the medical team treating the 11-month-old boy in London on Monday.

Michio Hirano, a professor of neurology at the Columbia University Medical Centre in NY, is scheduled to examine Charlie for the first time before discussing his condition with Great Ormond Street doctors and other medical experts.

Earlier this month New-York Presybterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center offered to admit Charlie and to provide him with experimental treatment, according to the Washington Post.

Ms Yates and Charlie's father, Chris Gard, want Mr Justice Francis to rule that Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, should be allowed to undergo a therapy trial overseen by Dr Hirano in NY.

Charlie suffers from the rare genetic condition, which causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. Charlie will die from his illness, his doctors have said.

Disturbance in the southern Atlantic may become a tropical storm
The U.S National Hurricane Center reports that the storm's maximum sustained winds are at 145 miles per hour (230 kph). An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the first wave this afternoon if necessary.

But last week, the case returned to the High Court after the hospital asked for a new hearing to consider new evidence from Hirano. The case attracted global attention after Pope Francis and President Donald Trump weighed in.

London's High Court, the Court of Appeal and Britain's Supreme Court have backed the hospital, a decision also supported by the European Court of Human Rights.

It is not clear if Hirano or the other doctor have performed the experimental therapy on other mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome patients, however, it is known that he is an expert on this particular syndrome and has published several research articles on the subject, most of which, however, involve animal models.

"It may be unconventional but this case is full of unconventional aspects", the judge said.

Bambino Gesu' Hospital chief Mariella Enoc said their researchers had put their treatment protocol for Charlie Gard at the disposal of Great Ormond Street Hospital and the London hospital was "thinking of trying to verify it".
