Canadian PM Trudeau to meet PM Varadkar in Dublin

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Irish counterpart reaffirmed their commitment to the Canada-EU trade pact known as CETA during their meeting Tuesday in Dublin.

"We need to see more female entrepreneurs and female-led start-ups right across the world", she said.

Mr Varadkar said the CETA deal is progressive and not just about big business, citing its focus on environmental protections.

"Most important, it will create more good, well-paying jobs for workers on both sides of the Atlantic", Trudeau said.

Mr Varadkar cited Justin Trudeau as one of his political role models when he was running for the Fine Gael leadership - saying he was an example of energising the political middle ground.

It was an apparent response to Trudeau wearing "Star Wars" socks when he met Varadkar's predecessor, Enda Kenny, in Montreal on May 4 on so-called "Star Wars Day".

Varadkar, who became Ireland's first openly gay prime minister in June, donned a mountie and maple leaf print pair in honor of his guest.

He even gave Trudeau a pair of green socks as one of his gifts. "People always have concerns about free trade agreements".

Both also touted their views about inclusiveness.

The Prime Minister is also expected to be hosted by the President Michael D Higgins as part of the two-day visit.

Others would point out, of course, that Trudeau has managed to do some things that eluded Varadkar - including getting a 50/50 gender split in his cabinet.

Varadkar joked that he received good advice from Trudeau during their meeting, since he's been in office about 18 days while Trudeau has held office for about 18 months.

Mr Trudeau will leave Ireland tomorrow, and will visit Edinburgh before attending the G20 Summit in Hamburg on Friday and Saturday.
