The three lions escaped from the Kruger National Park over the weekend.

Earlier same day, parks authorities said they had dispatched helicopters to aid in their search.

A farmer then shot one dead and wounded another on Wednesday night after they were caught feeding on his cattle.

Park alleged that the lions may have been driven out of the park due to population pressure. "The owner of the farm shot at the lions and killed one and wounded another".

"The planned industrial action could not have come at a worse time for SANParks' tourism haven‚ the Kruger National Park".

"A decision was made to put down the injured lion as well as the third lion", said SANParks spokesperson Janine Raftopoulos.

Initial reports indicated that four lions had escaped on Sunday, but parks officials have since said that evidence suggests only three escaped.

In 2015, a lion named Sylvester crawled under an electric fence at another park and went on a three-week sheep-killing spree before he was found by rangers taking a nap.

Two months ago, five other lions escaped from the park. "It attests to the adaptive responses and interaction of the ‡Khomani San, past, and present, to survive in a desert environment", said Mketeni.
