Cowboys WR Whitehead says his dog is being held for ransom

'If you know of any details regarding Blitz's whereabouts or who may be involved in this, please contact me immediately'. Making matters worse, Whitehead claims the thieves have contacted his phone and demanded ransom in return for Blitz.

In an Instagram post Sunday, Whitehead, 25, shared a photo of Blitz and the "heartbreaking" news that his dog was stolen a week previously.

Whitehead has posted numerous pictures of Blitz on social media over the last few months, and the dog even has his own Instagram account.

Whitehead signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Florida Atlantic in 2015.

The monetary figure that Whitehead told NBCdfw.com the ransom caller mentioned: $10,000.

Whitehead's friend was caring for the dog at Whitehead's house when the dog was taken, Whitehead said.

Whitehead said his friend had been "picked up" from his home, and that the person who showed up "came with somebody extra".

Whitehead said he got a phone call demanding money for Blitz's return, and Whitehead replied that he would pay the money, "I just gotta make sure my dog is OK, we'll meet".

"If they have any piece of a heart, just give it to someone else to give back to me".
