Death toll in the Assam floods increased to 66

One person is missing so far in flood in the district.

Officials said that close to 25,000 flood-affected people are taking shelter in 129 relief camps set up by the government in different districts. With this, the total number of persons losing their lives in this year's flood-related cases has gone up to 65, including eight in Guwahati.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Saturday said that 11,93,458 people have been suffering in 1,795 villages in the 24 districts.

He directed the five districts covered by the Kaziranga National Park - Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Biswanath Chariali and Sonitpur - to take stringent steps to safeguard wild animals affected by floods with help from police and the Forest Department.

Almost 15 lakh people are affected at 26 districts in flood.

ASDMA said 1,512 villages are under water and almost 50,000 hectares of crop area inundated. On Sunday, South Salmara, Dhubri and Morigaon remained the worst-affected districts.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authority has maintained smooth operation of railway services and are running special trains in flood-hit Assam where operation of passenger vehicles has been disrupted in many parts because of over topping highways by flood water.

Authorities are running 280 relief camps and distribution centres in 15 districts, where 22,837 persons are now taking shelter.

Floodwaters receded in some areas on Saturday but the Brahmaputra continued to flow above the danger mark in Jorhat, Tezpur, Goalpara and Dhubri. He directed officials to take steps to fix and rebuild the houses damaged by floods and fix the embankment breached by floods. Talking to the media, Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Barun Bhuyan said that an expert team from the State Water Resources department would visit North Lakhimpur on July 19 to find out a temporary preventive measure to channel out the flood water induced by NEEPCOs Ranganadi Hydro Electrical Plant. "We are asked to the district commissioners to provide adequate relief items to the flood-affected people", the Assam finance minister said.
