Federer beats Cilic at Wimbledon to lift 19th Grand Slam title

For the 8th time in his life, tennis legend Roger Federer won the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament.

Federer first played Wimbledon in 1999 and won the first of his eight titles in 2003.

It's his nineteenth career grand slam title during his illustrious professional career.

Though Cilic received frequent treatment for the blister before his match with Federer, the ailment prevented him from changing direction without pain. "Sometimes you don't feel great in the final and it's cruel". "I hope I can come back next year to try to defend the title".

"Better than holding the trophy and winning today is to be healthy", said Federer.

The 2015 US Open champion, said: "It was just a feeling that I knew that I could not give my best on the court, that I could not give my best game and my best tennis". "I kept on believing and dreaming so to be here with the eighth is fantastic".

The Swiss star, an eight-time Wimbledon Champion, will turn 36 in three weeks' time.

Roger Federer is already planning his return to Wimbledon next year after cruising to a record-breaking eighth title with a straight-sets victory against a distressed Marin Cilic.

IST: Marin Cilic holds on to his serve. In 1975, the American won his sole Wimbledon title, aged 31. 3-3 it is.

IST: Roger Federer makes it 2-2 in the third set against Marin Cilic.

IST: Another double fault by Roger Federer in the first set. Uphill battle for the Croat now. He's now trailing 4-3.

Cilic would loosen up himself a bit in the third set without any scoreboard pressure, and Federer understandably got a little less free as victory loomed. Can he consolidate his lead? Federer is definitely in formidable form right now.

It continued a remarkable resurgence by Federer who returned from six months off at the start of the year to win the Australian Open - ending a five-year wait for an 18th grand slam many thought would remain elusive.

When it comes to head-to-head, Federer has a clear 6-1 advantage against Cilic. The two of them have made for a remarkable year as the big players like Any Murray and Novak Djokovic have found themselves knocked out time and again.
