Horner suspects Vettel could be tempted by Mercedes one day

Horner suspects Vettel could be tempted by Mercedes one day

"This is a very intense season, I'm trying to prepare the best way I can for the battle ahead of me", defended Hamilton, who went on a two-day holiday with his friends to the Greek island of Mykonos instead, attracting criticism on social media, boos, and a barrage of questions from the British press.

"I tried it this morning and I got a bit dizzy", Vettel, the first driver to trial the new device, said.

An already intriguing weekend was given added spice overnight with news of grid penalties for Bottas and Ricciardo, both drivers in receipt of new gearboxes, while poor old Alonso's grid demotion is now nearly a custom. He finished ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was able to make an alternate strategy work well to fight his way from eighth on the grid after a penalty to finish fourth, just behind Ricciardo.

Kimi Raikkonen was fourth in the second Ferrari, while Nico Hulkenberg proved his Friday pace was no fluke as he took fifth for Renault. The British Grand Prix is the end of the first half of the season, and the championship is still anyone's for the taking.

Despite the gap in qualifying, Vettel - who felt the auto had "come alive" between Friday and Saturday morning practice - admitted he was expecting the Ferrari to be more competitive in race trim, as has often been the case in 2017.

"Each time I left the garage I gave the fans a wave and I could see them waving back".

"We've started the weekend really well", Bottas said.

Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel, 20 points clear of the Briton after last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, had plenty of fans in the crowd and was not shy in his title rival's absence.

The Finn's mark of one minute, 29.106 seconds saw him edge out team-mate and home hope Lewis Hamilton at the top of the time sheets, with Max Verstappen close by in third place in the Red Bull.

On a track which was expected to favour Mercedes' longer wheel-base auto and powerful engine, Bottas remained three-tenths clear of Hamilton with both Ferrari and Red Bull working their way into contention.

Bottas continues to apply the pressure to Hamilton, though. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) - 107 points 5.

While Mercedes announced the gearbox penalty for Bottas on Friday, Saturday morning saw another driver hit with the same penalty as Red Bull needed to change the gearbox in Daniel Ricciardo's vehicle.

"For the second run we thought it was going to be fine, then I got to Turn 3 and out of the blue I had a massive rear lock", he added.

The shield, made of transparent polycarbonate, is created to sit in front of the driver and deflect any flying debris.
