HTC grovels after serving up keyboard ads to some users

HTC has come under fire with ads started appearing in the stock keyboard app on one of its flagship devices.

The update enables banner ads at the top of the keyboard at seemingly random times, which is probably the last place you would want to see advertising. As if it weren't bad enough to be faced with ads no matter what corner of the Interwebs you go, HTC has decided that you should also see them in nearly all screens of your smartphone.

Understandably, affected HTC users are not happy.

HTC's partnership with TouchPal provides the company's devices with a different version of the keyboard compared to what you might see if you download TouchPal from the Play Store.

In response to the complaints, the official HTC Twitter account is asking users to uninstall the new updates to the keyboard. Removing those ads require users to purchase the paid version of the keyboard. According to a couple of reddit posts, users are already seeing ads on their HTC 10 phones when they start using the keyboard.

Fortunately, it is too easy to install other keyboards on Android, including Google's own Gboard.

During the past few days, HTC users have been complaining that they are seeing ads on the company's in-built keyboard app.

For its part, HTC has responded to widespread anger with the promise of a "fix" coming soon, as "this is absolutely not the experience we intended". Perhaps it was an error on HTC's part or maybe the company simply failed to anticipate the heated backlash.

Over the weekend, distress rippled around the HTC community as advertisements suddenly appeared in the TouchPal keyboard. The next step is to dole out a timely update to remove the ads.
