Iran Sentences American To 10 Years in Prison After Spying Accusations

Iran has identified the US national sentenced to 10 years for spying as Xiyue Wang, a 37-year-old researcher at Princeton University.

Mizan News Agency identified the student as 36-year-old Xiyue Wang, a fourth-year doctoral candidate specializing in Eurasian history.

Mizan, which is affiliated with Iran's hard-line judiciary, later reported that Wang was sentenced as part of an "infiltration project" that included the gathering of "confidential articles" to send to the State Department and Western academic institutions.

He was subsequently identified by Iran's intelligence bodies and arrested.

University officials said the school has been working with his family, the USA government, private counsel and others to facilitate his release.

"The Iranian regime continues to detain U.S. citizens and other foreigners on fabricated national-security related changes", a press statement by the State Department said, reported CNN.

Tehran, July17:A USA national has been sentenced in Iran to 10 years in prison on spying charges, Iranian officials have said. At least three other Americans are thought to be imprisoned in Iran although the number could be higher.

Mr. Trump has already taken the opposite view of his predecessor, Barack Obama closer ties with sunni saudi Arabia and calling for "isolating" the rival iranian shi'a.

An official from the State Department acknowledged reports of Wang's detention, according to the WSJ, and slammed the Iranian regime for detaining Americans on bogus spying charges.

But the agency said it took a report for the crime of " threatening or obscene letters or writing ". Heller's support is key because if a third GOP lawmaker defects on the bill, it will fail.

And Iran is one of Trump's favorite targets, going back to his campaign when he constantly blasted the pact reached by President Obama to curb Iran's nuclear program as the "worst deal ever".

Washington has repeatedly called for their release and for Tehran's cooperation in the case of Robert Levinson, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who disappeared in Iran in 2007.

There are at least four American-Iranian dual citizens now detained in Iran on unverified charges. It said it was hopeful he would be freed upon appeal.

Princeton University confirmed Sunday that a graduate student researching his dissertation in Iran had been sentenced to 10 years behind bars on charges of espionage.

Later, Fars News, again citing Mohseni-Ejheie, said he was a citizen of the United States and a country other than Iran.

A report by the Audit Court found in October that executives at state-owned banks had earned as much as 622 million rials (Dh70,058) a month - compared with average public sector salaries of US$400 (Dh1,469) - leading to hundreds of prosecutions and a new government salary cap.

Wang's arrest also illuminates the tense political situation within Iran over the future of US-Iran relations.

The brother of President Hassan Rouhani has been detained and an unnamed U.S. citizen sentenced to 10 years behind bars for "infiltrating" the country. According to Reuters, the student is a dual national (U.S. and China).
