Mahagun Moderne Society attacked by villagers

Noida: Angry villagers hurled stones and barged into a housing society in Noida near Delhi on Wednesday morning alleging that a young woman employed as domestic help in one of the apartments was held captive overnight and beaten up by her employers. They alleged that the maid was kept hostage for the entire night and was assaulted physically. "Being a woman and poor is a double whammy for them", says Annie Raja, general secretary, National Federation of Indian Women, a CPI- backed organisation.Zora's is not a lone case.

Eyewitnesses were quoted by the channel as saying that the protesters, who were carrying stones and sticks, broke open the gate of the complex and attacked the facility office. Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar Singh led a small police force to the Mahagun residence and contained the situation. The mob also blocked a main Dadri-Surajpur-Chhalera (DSC) road at Barola while, halting traffic towards Noida Phase 2 Industrial Area.

The residents, however, differ from the account of the protesters.

One of the residents of the society said that the maid was caught stealing from one of the apartments and was handed over to police.

The maid's husband, Babu Khan, along with the police had gone to Sethi's house that night to inquire about Zora, but they were told that she had left, a police official said. They ended their protest only after police intervention.

However, in a statement issued to ANI later in the day, the maid said she was beaten up by the lady of the house in question who alleged that she had stolen Rs 17,000 from the house.

Her husband, Abdul Sattar, said that when his wife did not return home on Tuesday, he went to the society with some policemen. Harshu, however, said she was firm that she would report the matter.

Over 200 villagers, several of whom also work as domestic help in housing societies near their village, stormed into the complex in Noida and got involved in a fight with the security guards, who did their best to keep them out. The mob also resorted to stone pelting on buildings and attack with rods.
