Pelicans, Rajon Rondo agree to one-year deal

Rajon Rondo and the Pelicans could soon begin contract negotiations after a contingent of New Orleans officials met with the free agent point guard Thursday, according to an ESPN report.

A source said Cousins played a "pivotal" role in Rondo coming to the Pelicans. The Pelicans are still a relatively young team that could definitely use a veteran with playoff experience on their roster. He also played one season for the Sacramento Kings in 2015-16 and 46 games for the Dallas Mavericks in 2014-15 after spending his first eight-plus campaigns with the Boston Celtics.

The embattled guard played last season for Chicago, averaging 7.8 points and 6.7 assists per game before his season was ended two games into their playoffs series against the Boston Celtics.

The Pelicans already brought back point guard Jrue Holiday this summer, but he could move to shooting guard if Rondo is added.

Sturgis lives in Pennsburg, Meo in Plumstead, Finocchiaro in Middletown and 19-year-old Jimi Tar Patrick in Newtown Township. Other remains were found on a sprawling farm in suburban Philadelphia but they still needed to be identified, he said.

Despite Rondo's dip in production, he is still a four-time All-Star with the potential to be a two-way force and can get out in transition and set up teammates.

The Bulls traded forward Jimmy Butler the night of the NBA Draft, paving the way for a rebuild that included declining their team option on Rondo.

During that season, Rondo averaged 11.9 points and tied his career high with 11.7 assists over 72 games.
