Privacy fears as United Kingdom plans age verification for porn sites

Pornography websites will be forced to prove that users are aged at least 18 under tough new powers to be announced by the Government tomorrow.

By April 2018, websites that make pornographic content available to United Kingdom users for commercial purposes-even if they are not based in the United Kingdom -will be legally required to install age verification controls, the BBC reported.

Ministers have taken a further step towards enforcing age verification for the use of online pornography in the United Kingdom from next spring.

The UK has made a decision to increase age verification efforts in the country for pornography websites and is expected to implement the process through legal methods on Monday.

Visitors to sites may need to input their credit card details in order by bypass the age restrictions, as is now the protocol with gambling websites.

Media watchdog Ofcom has proposed measures such as requesting credit card details, which are only issued to over 18s, as well as checking user details against the electoral register.

Ahead of this, he claimed authorities were "taking the next step" to ensure there is a legal requirement for adult websites to ensure content is "behind an age verification control".

Elor Azaria to be moved from military base to house arrest
He was convicted of manslaughter for killing an incapacitated terrorist and sentenced to 18 months in prison . Military judges are expected to rule on his appeal on July 30, Israeli media reported.

The new rules are due to be part of the Digital Economy Act, which encompasses the introduction of age-verification rules for porn sites, as well as the introduction of a regulator to check sites are complying with the new rules.

Digital minister Matt Hancock will formally begin the process, which was the subject of a 2016 consultation during David Cameron's government, in a written statement to the Commons later.

"All this means that while we can enjoy the freedom of the web, the United Kingdom have the most robust internet child protection measures of any country in the world".

'Steps like this to help restrict access, alongside the provision of free parental controls and education, are key. The report also stated that 65% of 15-16 years old and 48% of 11-16 years olds had seen pornography.

"It is essential to help parents and carers, as well as young people, be more aware of this risk and what they can do to prevent exposure and also to make sense of exposure if it happens".

However, Open Rights Group says storing personal data may allow porn companies to build "databases" on users' habits and could make them vulnerable to hackers.

Mr Hancock said: "The Digital Economy Act is about building a strong, safe and connected economy".
