Russia Findings Raise Hopes for US Sanctions Bill

Russia Findings Raise Hopes for US Sanctions Bill

Reps. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., and Ted Lieu, D-Calif., read the emails aloud amid a backdrop of a large poster board of Trump, Jr. on the cover of this week's Time magazine with the words "Red Handed" emblazoned on it, The Hill reported Friday. "Plain and simple", Pelosi said.

The email exchange suggested Trump Jr. was eager about the possibility of meeting with the Russian lawyer who was supposed to have incriminating information on 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Cardin said the Bill should have been passed because of Russian interference in last year's U.S. elections, occupation of parts of Ukraine and Georgia and support of the Syrian government.

"[Trump] said 'I could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and nobody would really do anything about it, ' " she recalled the president saying during the campaign.

Pelosi launched her complaints during a news conference House Democrats held to introduce a half-dozen resolutions of inquiry pertaining to the president's and administration members' potential ties to Russian operatives.

"It certainly does not help the administration at this point", a senior Republican House aide said.

House Democrats' objection stems from language in the updated bill that would have removed the ability of a disapproval resolution to be brought up under a privileged motion, removing the ability of the minority to call up a vote. "Our security and our democracy have been endangered by Russia's clear influence on the Trump Administration".

House Democrats have been objecting to sending the bill back to the Senate by unanimous consent and GOP leaders have been hesitant to call it up for a vote, because blue slip issues have typically been addressed in a bipartisan fashion.

By asking these questions, the Russian Federation scandal broadens from a Trump problem to a Republican Party problem.

By calling on Republicans to join them in protecting the 2018 election from Russian hacking Democrats have painted Republicans into a corner. "They have become enablers of the violation of our Constitution".

Seven members of Congress announced that they would introduce Resolutions of Inquiry on Friday as part of the coordinated effort. But the votes could put some Republicans in a tight spot - especially when it comes to voting on procuring the president's tax returns. They say language in the bill adds burdensome disclosure requirements that could put them at a competitive disadvantage with non-US companies working on global deals. Republicans aren't going to be allowed to hide from the Trump/Russia scandal in 2018.

House Democrats are also seeking records pertaining to any conversation the president or his surrogates had about modifying or revoking existing sanctions against Russian Federation, as well as records about the reasons for the president's use of Homeland Security resources to provide protection at the taxpayers' expense.
