Russia Threatens to Reciprocate US Seizure of Russian Diplomatic Compound

"We gave time for the new administration to examine this disgusting legacy and begin to build the bilateral relationship on the basis of mutual respect", Ms. Zakharova said.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters on Friday that Moscow "will have to take reciprocal measures" if the issue is not resolved.

Russia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in NY.

Ms. Zakharova said Russian Federation hoped to hear "concrete proposals" on how to untangle the situation at a meeting on Monday between Sergei A. Ryabkov, the deputy foreign minister of Russian Federation, and Thomas A. Shannon, the under secretary of state of the United States.

Zakharova complained yesterday that USA officials were not issuing visas to Russian diplomats to allow Moscow to replace the expelled employees and get its embassy back up to full strength.

"The seized compounds have not been returned yet", Ms. Zakharova said, as translated by TASS, a state-owned newswire.

The outgoing Obama administration expelled 35 suspected Russian spies late a year ago and seized two diplomatic compounds over what it said was the hacking of US political groups during the 2016 presidential election. "As for the measures - the number of personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow significantly exceeds the number of our personnel working in Washington".

"Accordingly, one of the possible options is, besides the purely symmetrical expulsion of the Americans, to simply equalize the staff", she said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin decided not to retaliate immediately, saying he would wait to see what the new administration of Donald Trump would do.

The Russian government has threatened to retaliate against the United States months after dozens of Russian officials were expelled from the USA and two of its properties were shuttered.
