In the suit, the party asked the court to stop INEC from activating the process of recalling Senator Dino Melaye.

INEC had on Monday released the schedule of activities for the recall of Melaye, the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the Senate, with August 19 fixed for verification of signatures of petitioners demanding his recall.

The senator restated his claim that his recall was masterminded by his state governor, Yahaya Bello.

According to Premium Times, Senator Melaye relied on Order 14 of the Senate Rule while pleading with his colleagues to keep him in the Senate.

"The Senate would also verify the legitimacy of the votes before a conclusion is made", said Ekweremadu.

"When they are done with that, they go back to section 68 which states that the president of the senate receives from the chairman of INEC the recall of the member". If he has done that, I am sure they would have applied their time to more meaningful ventures in Kogi State.

The senator said the names and signatures on the recall register was forged by Kogi state officials.

"The Commission shall issue the time-table and schedule of activities for the conduct of referendum subject to the outcome of the verification exercise", the statement added.

The commission said observers who will like to participate in the exercise have up till July 30 to register at the commission's headquarters, the Punch reports.

"The commission will adopt its normal way of conducting the verification exercise, which will be applicable to both the literate and not-so-literate".

"If the verification fails to meet the established standards, the commission will not proceed to the next stage".

Melaye had in a bid to save his seat equally lodged a suit before the court, contending that the petition presented to INEC for his recall was illegal, unlawful, wrongful, unconstitutional, invalid, null and void and of no effect in law.
