Second 'ineligible' Greens senator quits

Second 'ineligible' Greens senator quits

The federal Greens have lost two senators in just four days to citizenship issues, with Queensland representative Larissa Waters resigning from federal parliament after it was revealed that she holds dual citizenship with Canada.

Under Australia's constitution, a person can not run for federal office if they hold dual or plural citizenship.

The Australian Greens have been rocked by a second resignation in less than a week after Queensland Senator Larissa Waters quit upon realising she, too, was a dual national.

In the case of Senator Waters, that would be former Australian Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett.

Waters, like Ludlum, said it was with "shock and sadness" that she learned she was a dual citizen.

Waters' resignation means the Greens are worse off - they'll now be down two votes in the Senate while replacements for Waters and Ludlam are found, affecting the balance of power and possibly making it easier for the government to pass legislation.

Waters explained her parents had told her she could pursue Canadian citizenship but when she hadn't by the time she was 21, she didn't bother and assumed she only held Australian citizenship.

Uber app now allows tipping in MA and nationwide
In the settlement, Uber agreed to allow drivers to solicit tips - and has now implemented that feature into the app nationwide. If riders decide to tip the driver, they can easily choose from preset tip amounts or select a custom amount.

I had not renounced since I was unaware that I was a dual citizen.

Senator Waters last month made history by becoming the first woman to breastfeed her child while passing a motion before the Senate.

Waters said the law in was changed a week after she was born and that she should have renounced her Canadian citzenship.

The former Queensland senator was tearful when she apologised to her constituents for her oversight.

Senator Hinch said he knew he couldn't run for office as a dual-citizen and Mr Ludlam should have known the same, especially when a campaign about Tony Abbott made headlines.

Mr Di Natale said the Greens must review its internal processes to ensure this error never happens again.

It is unclear exactly who will replace Waters, and also Ludlam, but it is likely that the next person on the Greens ticket at the 2016 election in Queensland and Western Australia respectively will take their place in the Senate.
