Trump admin considering new sanctions on China over North Korea ties

Last week U.S. President Donald Trump denounced China's trade with North Korea, saying it had grown nearly 40 percent in the first quarter, and cast doubt on whether Beijing was helping to counter the threat from North Korea.

While China's imports from North Korea dropped 13.2 percent in January-to-June to $880 million, exports to North Korea rose 29.1 percent to $1.67 billion during the period, he said.

China Customs said Thursday that the country's overall trade with North Korea had grown 10.5 percent in the first half of the year.

American voters consider North Korea a greater threat to national security than the militant group Islamic State, a survey showed Wednesday, amid heightened concern in the U.S.in the wake of the North's test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

"Simple accumulated data can not be used as evidence to question China's severe attitude in carrying out UN Security Council resolutions", Huang told a press briefing.

Took a meeting with a lawyer from Russian Federation , it lasted for a very short period and nothing came of the meeting. Trump is continuing to downplay the issue, saying that "nothing happened" as a result of the meeting.

"Trade between China and North Korea grew nearly 40 per cent in the first quarter".

Trump has complained that trade increased between the two despite calling on his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to use the nation's unique diplomatic and economic clout over North Korea as leverage.

The new sanctions applied to a travel ban and asset freeze to 14 people and four North Korean entities.

The UN and the US have attempted to use sanctions for the past decade in an attempt to stem North Korea's nuclear weapons development, but the latest July 4 test, which demonstrated a significant advance in its capabilities, have forced worldwide bodies to reconsider their response going forward. "The maintenance of normal economic and trade exchanges between China and [North Korea] does not violate Security Council's resolutions", the foreign ministry spokesman said. "So much for China working with us - but we had to give it a try!"
