UAE Hacked Qatar Government, Social Media Websites

Qatar, the tiny Gulf state being isolated by its neighbors, said Monday the reported involvement of the United Arab Emirates in hacking its government news site in May is "unfortunate" and a breach of agreements among the Gulf countries.

The UAE government has responded by describing the Washington Post article as "false".

UAE Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash said that the agreement signed by the USA and Qatar on the financing of terrorism was a positive development but did not live up to their expectations.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and several other Sunni-majority countries have severed relations with Qatar since June 5, accusing the Gulf state of supporting terrorism based on its ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and the Taliban.

The hack, which took place the following day, preceded the current split in the Gulf between Qatar and a coalition of four states that are mounting an economic and diplomatic boycott against it.

But according to USA intelligence agencies, in a report leaked to the Washington Post, the hack was planned by UAE government officials, although it is unclear whether UAE government agencies carried out the cyber attacks directly or contracted a third-party to do it for them to keep it at arm's length.

It was unclear whether the UAE carried out the hacks itself or had contracted to have them done, the Post said. However, the remarks were reported across the region and caused a stir.

With a small but vociferous band of protesters banging on the doors outside, the minister calmly explained the crisis had moved on to a new stage - one that could be prolonged as the quartet of nations holds firm on their demands for Qatar to stop support for extremists.

Qatar said in June it had proof that the recent hacking of its state-run news agency and government social media accounts was linked to countries that have recently cut ties with it.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was previously known to be working with Qatar to probe the hacking.

While much of what Qatar's critics charge is true, you also have to consider the source.

Putin discussed the crisis with a number of Gulf leaders in a series of phone calls, underlining that it should be resolved through diplomatic means.

"What we know now is that Qatar is admitting that the list is worthy, that the list needs to be looked at, and that they need to change some of their laws to ensure that there is a proper process to cover this list", he said.
