Venkaiah Naidu declared as NDA's candidate for Vice President's post

The opposition parties have chosen former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as its Vice President candidate. The decision was announced by BJP President Amit Shah at the party headquarters.

Reflecting its southern ambitions, the ruling BJP on Monday picked Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu as the party's official candidate for the Vice-President's post.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Parliamentary Board met on Monday evening, sources told IANS.

Venkaiah Naidu has been declared as NDA's candidate for Vice President Elections. "I am happy serving as Usha-pati (husband of his wife Usha)", he had remarked.

A political veteran, Venkaiah Naidu is now serving as a Union Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation as well as the Information and Broadcasting Minister. Mr Naidu, by profession, Agriculturist, Political and Social worker has been associated with Politics from his college days in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

Naidu once famously coined a reverse acronym of MODI, prime minister's second name, as "Maker Of Developed India".

Ram Kovind, a 71-year-old lawyer-turned-politician who was until recently governor of the eastern state of Bihar and the BJP candidate in the presidential race has been predicted to win. All other things are only speculations.

Of the 790 MPs, 245 are from the Rajya Sabha and 543 from the Lok Sabha.

The Presidential election will take place on July 17 and election to the post of Vice-President will be held on August 5. He represented Karnataka in the Upper House for three terms, and now represents Rajasthan.

"They have already announced their candidate".

Meanwhile, tThe election to choose Indias 14th President saw nearly 100 per cent voting on Monday with Lok Sabha Secretary and Returning Officer Anoop Mishra terming it "probably the highest turnout ever". BJP is keen in bringing a South India that will even lead for strengthening the party.

Breaking the Congress-Communist duopoly in Kerala and making forays into Tamil Nadu have been high on Amit Shah's agenda.

It was Venkaiah who has been preventing the split in the TDP-BJP alliance and has been resisting the attempts of the state BJP leaders to cut off the ties with the TDP.

The sources say that it is certain to be a person from south India where the party wants to strengthen its presence. "I have no intention to become the rashtrapati or uprashtrapati".
