The health department says it's possible for West Nile to lead to serious illness - such as encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain, or meningitis, which is is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord - with lingering complications and/or death.

The Jackson County Health Department reports routine mosquito testing identified some who tested positive for West Nile in the county in 2017.

Tarrant County reported two death associated with the West Nile Virus in 2016.

Health officials said the weather could be a factor.

West Nile is common, found every summer in dead birds and mosquitoes in the area.

About one in five people who are infected will develop a fever with other symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Mosquitoes that carry West Nile are most active at dusk and dawn.

REPEL - When outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. Repellents with DEET, picaridin, IR3535 and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol provide the best protection. Individuals should not attempt to handle the birds, although there is no evidence that people can get the virus from handling live or dead birds.
