Champions League: Liverpool beat "Hoffenheim", the curious defeat of the "young boys"

Champions League: Liverpool beat

Liverpool took the first step towards the UEFA Champions League group stages as they earned a 2-1 win away to Hoffenheim in the playoff round on Tuesday evening.

And Nagelsmann believes his side were unlucky not to take anything from the game as they failed to punish Liverpool after creating good opportunities, including a missed penalty from Andrej Kramaric.

In the second half Hoffenheim again started well, but gradually ran out of ideas, and with 16 minutes to go Harvard Nordtveit deflected James Milner's cross past Oliver Baumann; with two away goals, Liverpool looked nearly home.

Sadio Mane scored one of three goals for Liverpool in their domestic opener.

The only blemish was his marking for Hoffenheim's goal - when he appealed for offside rather than challenge for the ball - but otherwise it was an impressive display from the teenager. "We weren't the worst team but the least lucky".

Set-pieces had been the team's downfall at Watford on Saturday but the 18-year-old, in only his 14th senior appearance, showed there is also a flip-side with a maiden goal the absent wantaway Brazilian Philippe Coutinho would have been proud of.

Liverpool is without its star player Philippe Coutinho, who is still linked with a move to Barcelona after submitting a transfer request, but that is not concerning Klopp.

Kenya: Odinga puts off announcement on "next plan of action"
The group's executive director, George Kegoro, says this is not the first time the Kenyan government has tried to de-register it. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights says at least 24 people have been shot dead by police since the August 8 vote.

"We defended majority really well, but at the end is it enough if we concede one goal? No".

Alexander-Arnold admitted it was a dream to score for Liverpool on his Champions League debut.

The Reds have taken a 2-1 lead in the first leg of the qualifier, and will head to Anfield for the return leg with high confidence. I think we had the better chances, the clearer chances'.

Klopp is happy enough with the result, but insists that Liverpool need a passionate Anfield behind them in the second leg to make sure of a spot in the group stage of the Champions League.

The Romanians, runners-up in their league last season, could even have snatched a win as Gabriel Enache and Junior Morais both went close in the second half.

Out for the second half and the home side were looking to get back into the game - Gnabry in particular was a threat for the German side playing their first ever European game.
