First Nations People Support A Melbourne Council's Decision To Scrap Australia Day

City of Yarra councillors voted unanimously on Tuesday night to move its traditional citizenship and citizen-of-the-year award ceremonies from 26 January to another date out of respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Malcolm Turnbull has launched a blistering parliamentary attack on those who want to change the date of Australia Day, calling the national holiday a time for celebration of a successful multicultural society.

May 27 - the date of the famous referendum in 1967 when over 90% of Australians voted to change the constitution to include Aboriginals as recognised Australian citizens.

"They are seeking to take a day which unites Australia and turn it into one which divides us", he said.

In a week where the issue of citizenship has been hotly debated, Mr Turnbull said Australians should be proud of celebrating Australia Day and should get behind it.

Would you like to see Australia Day moved to another date?

In its place Yarra City's nine councillors - of which four are Greens members - instead chose to hold a number of Aboriginal-themed events, with the decision made in the wake of a recent survey of just 300 people which "showed strong support" locally.

Assistant Minister for Immigration Alex Hawke also weighed in, saying the government would not allow the council to politicise citizenship.

Huge protests by indigenous Australians and their supporters were held on Australia Day this year amid growing calls to find a new date for Australia Day.

Federal agents used those records to identify the cell towers that handled the suspects calls during the time periods in which the robberies occurred.

"Whether it be political correctness rampant in our schools, the gender fluidity stuff which is part of the Safe Schools program which has been institutionalised in Victoria, so many people are anxious about these assaults on things we have always taken for granted", Mr Abbott told 2GB.

Mr Turnbull said he acknowledged the day was "complex for many indigenous Australians", but the "overwhelming majority" of Australians believed the date should not change.

He described the council decision as "utterly out of step with Australian values".

Mr Hawke has also written to Local Government and Territories Minister Fiona Nash asking her to consider revoking federal funding to Yarra for citizenship ceremonies.

Citizenship ceremonies will no longer be held on the day.

"I am surprised and disappointed that the City of Yarra has chosen to pursue this divisive approach".

'I don't think anybody should be trying to diminish that.

He said if the Yarra council didn't "pull its head in" then they should be sacked by the state government.

As the debate over changing our national day of celebration from January 26 rages on, Cr Antonio said the discussion was a matter for the Australian Government.
