Garden Bridge sinks with all (£37m) public funds lost

Garden Bridge sinks with all (£37m) public funds lost

The Garden Bridge Trust, the charity created to build and run the proposed garden bridge, has informed the Mayor of London, Transport for London, and the Department of Transport of its decision to shut down the project.

"I have always been clear that not a penny more of taxpayers' money should be allocated to the project".

Abersoch went on to say that there was a lack of communication from the Mayor's Office and questioned the legitimacy of pulling public support based on the report produced by Dame Margaret Hodge, rather than other feasibility investigations conducted by the Mayor's Office.

'Now we can have some genuinely exciting, intelligent and innovative design for all - including new bridges in east London and new green spaces'.

The trust established to build the Garden Bridge, which would have linked Temple with South Bank, shut down after failing to secure guarantees for annual maintenance costs.

The project's backers included architect Lord Rogers and Olympic designer Thomas Heatherwick, who drew up plans for the bridge.

'Londoners will, like me, be very angry that London taxpayers have now lost tens of millions of pounds committed by the previous mayor on a project that has amounted to nothing'.

'Labour has no vision for London and no ambition...the Garden Bridge was a handsome project and could have been easily financed.

Since Mr Khan's announcement, the trust has had discussions with a potential benefactor and the government, which came to nothing. The controversial project, which has had questionable levels of public support, has already cost the taxpayer over £37 million.

A damning report published in April by Margaret Hodge, a well respected parliamentarian, had called for the project to be scrapped, pointing to the tripling of the project's costs, and the mere £69 million in private backing it had attracted.

However Labour London Assembley member Tom Copley said: "It's a relief that the Trust have finally chose to stop flogging this dead horse".

He added: "The Garden Bridge was a handsome project and could have been easily financed". "Boris Johnson drove forward this vanity project during his mayoralty, and the lion's share of the blame for this whole debacle must fall at his feet". "The garden bridge has not found its right moment, but I hope one day it will and that London continues to be open to ideas that make life here better".

The Garden Bridge project will now be formally closed, which includes terminating contracts and concluding donor funding agreements associated with the project.
