Jeff Flake bashes fellow Republicans in essay about standing up to Trump

He wasn't shy during the campaign about his refusal to endorse Trump, and the president has even floated the idea of bankrolling a primary campaign against him. It was we conservatives who were largely silent when the most egregious and sustained attacks on Obama's legitimacy were leveled by marginal figures who would later be embraced and legitimized by far too many of us.

He's absolutely right. President Donald Trump hasn't just been the only guy in the ring.

"To carry on in the spring of 2017 as if what was happening was anything approaching normalcy required a determined suspension of critical faculties", he writes, "and tremendous powers of denial".

And it gets better from there. However, it received support from just 49 GOP senators.

Flake cited a Washington Post column by conservative writer Michael Gerson, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, who wrote in May that the "conservative mind, in some very visible cases, has become diseased" and had "with the blessings of a president.abandoned the normal constraints of reasons and compassion".

Some Republicans say Trump and his administration only made it harder to pass health care by ineptly pressuring Sen. And that Congress needs to step and assert itself as part of the "checks and balances". They could pass a law forcing Trump to turn over his tax returns so the public could be certain there aren't problematic financial ties between Trump and Russian Federation. Bob Dole - who trashed conservatives in the 2016 Republican presidential primary - a principled constitutional conservative? The White House political team has been actively talking with potential GOP challengers, with the goal of coalescing behind the most credible contender who could defeat him. "Anger and resentment and blaming groups of people for our problems might work politically in the short term, but it's a risky impulse in a pluralistic society, and we know from history that it's an impulse that, once acted upon, never ends well".

Flake could also face a competitive election in November.

Over the weekend it was reported that Everton youngster Callum Connolly could be used as a make-weight in any deal for the 27-year-old.

If the Trump administration doesn't win any major legislative victories while he's in office, conservatives will surely be quite disappointed.

Now, why does this matter? Jeff Flake says his fellow Republicans have let President Donald Trump lead the country away from conservative principles and democratic ideals. Flake voted to confirm all of Trump's Cabinet nominees, even Ben Carson, a conspiracy theorist with no relevant experience, and billionaire vulture investor Wilbur Ross, who'd helped Trump avoid bankruptcy in Atlantic City. So in that regard, what Flake did is noteworthy, and it has earned our thanks.

To his credit, Flake's piece doesn't pull its punches. From Barack Obama on the left to Bill Kristol on the right, critics described Trump's brand of politics as fundamentally incompatible with conservative principles and Republican heritage.

The only reference Flake makes to now-disgraced former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert is in a story about a time Flake forced a vote on stripping a Hastert earmark, even after being informed by a journalist that the IL project originated with the speaker.

In parsing Flake's comments, his issue with the president is that some of Trump's actions are "profoundly unconservative" - not profoundly illogical, profoundly incriminating or profoundly unconstitutional.

To put it charitably, this is a weak response to a political crisis. He has created a permission structure for Republican senators with safer seats to express publicly what they often tell reporters privately.

They're reasserting their independence, which looked sorely diminished in the aftermath of Trump's surprise election win.
