Equifax Twitter Account Links Worried Customers to a Spoof Site

Earlier this month, the credit-reporting company acknowledged that a hack had compromised the personal data of 143 million United States consumers and an unknown number of foreign ones, making it one of the biggest computer-security breaches in history.

After 143 Million people were affected by a security breach in Equifax, the company created another site directing customers to check whether their data including name, social security number, and other private information has been compromised or not.

Equifax can't seem to get Twitter right either.

Luckily, the site on securityequifax2017.com was created by developer Nick Sweeting, who had no intention of harvesting users' information. Sadly, it led to another "oops" moment for the company when their twitter account linked the bereaved customers to a spoof site. "Consumers should be aware of fake websites purporting to be operated by Equifax".

Critics are calling Equifax's response to the data breach a mess. Soon after it launched, some browsers flagged it as a phishing site.

As Sweeting further shared on social media, Equifax tweeted the link to his fake site at least eight separate times since September 9. He created it within hours of the breach announcement to show how easily it is to impersonate the response website.

How iOS 11 will change your Apple device
Furthermore, since Apple has dropped support for 32-bit apps completely, therefore users might not find this in good taste at all. Those new features will make the iPhone feel a little different, but it's actually the iPad that benefits most from iOS 11 .

The official domain address is "equifaxsecurity2017.com" whereas Sweeting's version is "securityequifax2017.com".

"I made the site because Equifax made a huge mistake by using a domain that doesn't have any trust attached to it [as opposed to hosting it on equifax.com]", Sweeting told The Verge. He also said: "I can guarantee there are real malicious phishing versions already out there". "Tweet to @equifax to get them to change it to equifax.com before thousands of people loose [sic] their info to phishing sites!"

"As it stands, their site is dangerously easy to impersonate, it only took me 20 minutes to build my clone", Sweeting wrote to Fortune in a direct message on Twitter. "Equifax should have hosted this on equifax.com with a reputable [EV] SSL Certificate", the site continues to lambast the company. "The real blame lies with the people who originally made a decision to set the site up badly".

"[Equifax's] response to this incident leaves millions vulnerable to phishing attacks on copycat sites", reads the fake page.

"All posts using the wrong link have been taken down", a spokesperson told Mashable via email.
