Tesla is Developing Their Own Self-Driving AI Chip with AMD

Tesla is reportedly developing its own processor for artificial intelligence, intended for use with its self-driving systems, in partnership with AMD.

Neither Tesla nor AMD responded to requests for comment, but the CNBCreport was seemingly bolstered by comments made by Sanjay Jha, CEO of AMD spinoff GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor foundry, during a conference today that it is working directly with Tesla on producing a chip.

XAutoplay: On | OffA report from CNBC, issued just before the market close, said Tesla is running tests on the first samples of the AMD processor. Understandably AMD shares have risen significantly in afterhours trading.

With the above arrangements brought to light but in question, CNBC dug around and found a "source familiar with the matter" to shine light on any arrangements between these tech companies.

After hiring Andrej Karpathy as its new head of AI and Autopilot Vision, earlier this year, auto maker Tesla hopes to make a mark in the autonomous vehicle market and compete with the likes of Google and Samsung.

The silicon manufacture process at Tesla is being led by Jim Keller, veteran chipmaker responsible for Apple A4 and A5 chips used in the fantastic iPhone 4 and 4S respectively.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously asserted that totally autonomous driving would be available to consumers by sometime in 2019. For Tesla, this is the firs ttime they've opted for a objective built AI processor, which will be using both AMD and Tesla IP.
