Trump praises Turkey's Erdogan as a friend

"We have a great friendship as countries", he added.

Trump said it was "a great honor" to host Erdogan Thursday for a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

"Washington should not harbor terrorists and they should be extradited to Turkey", Erdogan said. "With Putin we will discuss additional steps needed to be taken in order to eradicate terrorists once and for all to restore peace".

At the start of their meeting Thursday in New York, Trump heaped praise on Erdogan, who has been criticized for a crackdown in Turkey following an attempted coup previous year.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: We'll be discussing many issues - many issues.

Accompanying Erdogan in the meeting were Turkey's Chief of Military Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Energy Minister Berat Albayrak, Intelligence Chief Hakan Fidan and Turkey's presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin, as well as the Turkish ambassador to the US Serdar Kilic and Turkey's envoy to the UN Feridun Sinirlioglu.

The statement released by the Turkish presidency said Erdoğan and Trump reiterated their opposition against the KRG referendum, stating that the move would have serious consequences for the region's stability.

But the U.S. had already quietly put the sale on hold after the violence, and the Trump administration had informed the Turkish government that the sale wouldn't be allowed to take place.

Turkey is part of the US-led coalition against Daesh in Syria and Iraq but Ankara's ties with Washington are strained over support provided by the United States to the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG.
