Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose Dubai drama

Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose Dubai drama

With a one-shot lead, there's no strategy.

With Fleetwood struggling to make birdies and finishing way behind in joint 21st place on 11 under 277, Rose needed to finish in sole possession of fourth to win his second Order of Merit title.

From there, the 2007 Order of Merit victor - who is seeking a third tournament win in succession - admirably scrambled a par to finish with a third-round 65 and remain at 15-under 201 total.

Rose, in keeping with the gripping nature of this contest, was to find the water when seeking to reach the final green in two and thereby extend his lead.

Having claimed two tournament victories in succession to give himself a chance of ending the year as the European Tour's number one for a second time, Rose led by one overnight in Dubai and remained atop the leaderboard after turning in 32 to reach 19 under on Sunday.

Rose saved par on the last despite taking a penalty drop, pitching to seven feet and rolling in a testing right-to-left putt for par which kept him one clear of Frittelli, who had birdied four of the last five holes in a flawless 63. He's done everything he needs to do on his end, so it's a lot of fun. I just see it as a great opportunity and the course doesn't know I've won two in a row.

Needing a win to have a chance of pipping both Fleetwood and Rose to the Race to Dubai title, Sergio Garcia made an outstanding charge - birdieing six of his first nine before finding further gains at the 12th and 15th to reach 18 under.

Yet there was to be no miracle finish for Rose, with Fleetwood instead topping the standings. "But I needed a low one today for sort of both purposes", Fleetwood said. "A year and a half ago, I was absolutely nowhere in the game".

"It's fantastic. You start the season in November/December and you are watching the last shot of the season to see who wins".
